Justin Minott from the African American Alliance of CDFI CEOs interviews Naquetta Ricks of Colorado State Representatives, focusing on her journey, mission, and the impact of her work. Here is a brief recap of this powerful conversation:

Justin: Could you share your journey into politics and public service?

Naquetta: Of course. My journey into politics wasn't initially planned. With a background in accounting and entrepreneurship, I found myself increasingly involved in community activism, particularly around issues related to education and immigrant rights. Encouraged by those around me and fueled by a desire to create positive change, I decided to translate my passion for advocacy into a career in public service.

Justin: What motivated your decision to enter politics, particularly given your background in business?

Naquetta: The decision to enter politics was largely motivated by a sense of responsibility to address the negative rhetoric and systemic injustices facing immigrants and marginalized communities. As someone who has experienced these challenges firsthand, I felt compelled to step up and be a voice for those who are often overlooked or misrepresented in traditional political spaces.

Justin: As a state representative, what are your main areas of focus and legislative priorities?

Naquetta: My main areas of focus as a state representative revolve around healthcare, education, housing, business development, and criminal justice reform. These issues are interconnected and impact the daily lives of Coloradans in profound ways. My legislative priorities are centered on addressing disparities, promoting equity, and supporting the economic and social well-being of all residents, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.

Justin: How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted your legislative agenda and priorities?

Naquetta: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on my legislative agenda and priorities. Initially, it forced us to pivot and address the immediate challenges of healthcare access, housing instability, and economic relief. Now, as we transition into the recovery phase, our focus is on rebuilding stronger and more resilient communities, ensuring that resources are available for individuals, families, and businesses to recover and thrive post-pandemic.

Justin: What specific initiatives or bills are you working on to address the post-pandemic recovery and support marginalized communities?

Naquetta: I'm currently working on a range of initiatives and bills aimed at addressing the post-pandemic recovery and supporting marginalized communities. This includes housing initiatives to prevent foreclosures and evictions, criminal justice reform measures to enhance accountability and transparency, and business development programs to assist small businesses in rebounding from the economic impact of the pandemic.

Justin: How do you see your role as a state representative contributing to positive change in Colorado?

Naquetta: I see my role as a state representative as one piece of a larger puzzle in contributing to positive change in Colorado. By advocating for equitable policies, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, and working collaboratively with colleagues and constituents, I strive to make meaningful contributions to the well-being and prosperity of all Coloradans.
